Last Thursday evening, the whole Bright Bee team donned their aprons and kept themselves busy in the kitchen baking up some tasty homemade treats, all in the name of charity.

The charitable cause for the bake sale was Antibiotic Research UK (@1ANTRUK) – the UK’s first charity dedicated to developing new antibiotic therapies, raising awareness among the general public and professionals, and supporting patients and their families. Antibiotic resistance is a threat to modern medicine and in the UK alone, an increasing number of people are suffering from infections that can no longer be treated by antibiotics.

The O’Neill Review puts the magnitude of this problem into context: by 2050, it is estimated that more than 10 million people will be at risk of drug-resistant infections – a figure larger than the number of deaths caused by cancer! These facts go to show how fitting and worthy a cause it is for the Bright Bee team to dust out their rolling pins.

Our baked goods on offer ranged from lemon drizzle cake with crystallised ginger and blueberry muffins to chocolate chip cookies and fudge brownies. We even sold corn bread (because we had to have a savoury alternative!), but the pièce de résistance was Seb’s strawberry and chocolate ganache tart on an Oreo base. As you can see from the picture below, we were covered on most bases!

From 12-2 we were ready to hit the lunch time crowd with sweet additions to their Sainsbury’s meal deal, because who wouldn’t want an indulgent chocolate brownie to boost their sugar levels on a Friday afternoon?

All in all, it was a great success and we were extremely pleased to see many faces from the building supporting the cause, and being very generous too. Our baking bonanza totalled to £184.03, and to top that, Bright Bee matched this to raise our overall total to £368.06! This is a fantastic result for such an incredible cause.
